PENTHOUSE
Location: HOUSTON, TX
This two-story penthouse is in the heart of Uptown District in Houston’s Galleria area. The client had purchased an ‘open white box’ and wanted our help to transform the unit. We were thrilled to hear that they wanted a sophisticated homage to the Art Deco period, while maintaining a contemporary and livable setting.
“This period combined modernist styles, fine craftsmanship and rich materials”
The Results
We drew inspiration from prestigious architects of the Art Deco era to design this penthouse. Dream was asked to select all the interior finishes and architectural detailing. Our concept with this sleek high rise was a decidedly urban feel with concrete columns and exposed ceiling pipes in selected areas, but we add warmth with handsome finishes. Formal crown molding, baseboards and door casings were used to contrast the more organic elements.
One of first tasks was to design a metal stair railing with classic geometric patterns from the Art Deco period, then it was finished in a hand-painted silverleaf color, a hallmark of the era. The walnut hardwoods floors add a richness and depth with their natural stain. The wall color is a soft platinum that makes for a calming backdrop, but frames the gorgeous skyline views day and night.
The client requested lighting that would enhance the natural drama of the space and add illumination for artwork. In the main living room, we selected a chandelier from Italy made of a topaz colored Murano glass. The furniture is a subtle mix of sleek and sensuous contemporary and ones that give a strong nod to the ‘style moderne’ period. Colors of soft silvery gray, slate blues, creams, camel and warm ginger brown complete the look. All the area rugs are custom designed and hand made in wool and silk. The master bath is a picture of opulence in marble and honey onyx beckoning relaxation. This project hearkens back to an exhilarating period that signaled over-the-top luxury.
